Intel as a game mechanic

I have played many games where Fog of War is a key game element but I'm wondering if there are any where you can actually capture and interpret intelligence or spread misinformation?
Has anyone out there in Wargamer land come across this before? If so, how well did it work?

Sorry if this subject has been discussed before.

I have never come across it in somebody else' game but have wondered about mechanisms by which this might be simulated. One might be to give spies, agents and intelligence officers the chance of spotting enemy units. In the case of intelligence officers that might be at sporadic and at ridiculously long distances.

You could steal some of the mechanics used in naval carrier battle games to ensure that the information is incomplete and sometimes wrong.
