I really liked the film (the European version) despite the fact that in some scenes it seemed too cruel.
As for books I would recommend to read Daniel Pennac. Pick any book of his. His detective stories are great 8-)

I would recommend Agatha Christie's 10 Indians. It is a gorgeous book ;)
